BFF is kissing my husband in my bed while I have postpartum depression. "She's crazy. I will be the legal mother of this baby." - 4

The Intervention

Three days later, they spring the trap.

Or what they think is the trap.

I’m in the backyard, pushing Lily on a baby swing. Mark comes out with Chloe.

Behind them are two strangers. A man and a woman. The woman is holding a clipboard.

“Honey, we need to talk,” Mark says. His voice is soft. Pitying.

The woman steps forward. “I’m Brenda from Child Protective Services. We’ve received a report about concerning behaviors.”

Chloe puts her hand on my arm. “We’re doing this because we love you, okay?”

I look at the clipboard. It’s a thick file.

My “crazy” texts. Printed out. Annotated.

“Can you tell me about this message?” Brenda asks, pointing to one.

It’s from three months ago. 2 AM. “I can’t do this. I’m a terrible mother. Lily deserves better.”

Standard postpartum depression. A cry for help.

To Brenda, it looks like a confession.

“I was sick,” I say. “I had PPD. I’m in treatment.”

Chloe sniffles. “We’ve been so worried. She doesn’t sleep. She just stares at the wall.”

I turn to Brenda. “Do you have a warrant?”

She blinks. “Excuse me?”

“A warrant. To remove my child from my custody. Do you have one?”

Mark’s face goes red. “Why are you being difficult? We’re trying to help you!”

“No, Mark,” I say. “You’re trying to replace me.”

I pull out my phone. I open the nanny cam app.

“Brenda, I’d like to show you something. From three nights ago.”

I hit play. The volume is up.

The video shows the hallway. Then the master bedroom door opens.

Chloe and Mark walk out. They’re laughing. She’s wearing my robe.

“You’re so bad,” she giggles.

“Shh. You’ll wake the crazy lady,” he says.

Chloe’s face drains of color. “That’s… that’s not what it looks like.”

Brenda looks at the video. Then at Chloe. Then at Mark.

“This is a domestic issue,” Brenda says slowly. “Not a child safety issue.”

“But the texts!” Chloe shrieks. “She’s unstable!”

“The texts were sent to her support system,” I say. “Which you abused. I have affidavits from my doctor and my therapist stating I am not a danger to myself or my child.”

I hand Brenda a sealed envelope. “From Dr. Evans. And Dr. Kline, the forensic psychologist.”

Brenda opens it. She reads for a full minute.

Then she closes the file. “This report indicates the referral was made in bad faith. To harass the mother.”

She looks at Chloe. “Ma’am, interfering with a custodial parent can be a crime.”

Chloe steps back. “I was just trying to help!”

“No,” Brenda says. “You were trying to alienate a child from her mother. We see this sometimes. It’s parental alienation. And we don’t tolerate it.”

She turns to me. “I’m sorry for the intrusion, ma’am. This case is closed.”

She and her partner leave.

The backyard is silent except for Lily’s cooing.

Mark is staring at me like he’s never seen me before.

“You planned this,” he whispers.

“I protected my daughter,” I say. “Which is more than you did.”

Chloe starts crying. Real tears this time. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry. I don’t know what I was thinking.”

“You were thinking you could steal my life,” I say. “But you forgot one thing.”

“What?” she whimpers.

“I’m the mother.”

I take Lily from the swing. She snuggles into my chest.

“Mark, your bags will be on the porch by 5 PM. Chloe, if you ever come near my family again, I will file for a restraining order. And I will use that motel receipt to prove you’re a homewrecker in open court.”

I walk into the house. My house.

Behind me, I hear Chloe sobbing. Mark yelling.

I close the door. Lock it.

Lily looks up at me. Her blue eyes are clear.

“It’s just us now, baby,” I whisper. “And we are going to be just fine.”

The battle is won. But the war for my daughter’s future is just beginning. One page left.
